CYCLISTS are being urged to take on a 50-mile bike ride for charity.

Northwich-based children’s charity Tiny Steps is preparing to host the annual Dave Holman Challenge.

Dave died in July 2016 aged just 38 after a crash on the A556 in Plumley.

His friends and family have put on a fundraiser every year since to help raise money for Tiny Steps, a charity close to Dave’s heart.

Now in its seventh edition, this year’s challenge will see a team of cyclists ride 50 miles around Cheshire.

Organiser Sue Tait said: “I checked the route out recently and was hugely impressed with the scenery.

“It’s a lovely ride along quiet back roads and suitable for cyclists of all standards.”

Prior to his death, Dave had done various fundraising activities for Tiny Steps, which was the nominated charity at his funeral.

He had been due to take part in a 37-mile football-themed walk around Liverpool with a group of friends.

The event still went ahead but was renamed the Dave Holman Challenge and has become an annual tradition.

Ahead of this year’s challenge, on June 15, the Tiny Steps committee is looking for cyclists to get involved.

The ride will start at the Lion Pub in Moulton, heading along country lanes in Lach Dennis, Knutsford and Rostherne.

The route then turns south through Pickmere and Crowton before finishing back at The Lion.

All participants must raise at least £50 for Tiny Steps, who are looking to create a sensory play area and social café for children and young people with additional needs in the Northwich and Winsford area.

The charity was set up by Martin and Laura Clifton when their daughter was diagnosed with a rare form of epilepsy called West Syndrome.

Speaking at the first Dave Holman Challenge in 2016, Laura said: “As a colleague and friend we were deeply saddened but proud to have the name Dave Holman for the challenge.

“As a person who was so giving and was such a strong advocate for those most vulnerable we know he would be so proud about what has been achieved.”
